At Chemport Innovation Center, collaboration and real-world impact are at the heart of everything we do. Scale-ups and established companies alike find in our ecosystem the facilities, partners, and support they need to accelerate their growth. The best way to understand the value of Chemport Innovation Center is through the voices of those who experience it every day.

EEW is your partner for the thermal treatment of your waste. Since 2010, we have been removing several hundred thousand tons of commercial waste, household waste, and substitute fuels each year at our site. And we do this safely and with very low emissions — supported by personal service, professional advice, and well-coordinated processes. For both municipalities and commercial customers.

At EEW, we are actively committed to making our processes and installations more sustainable. An important part of this effort is CO₂ capture, which helps us reduce our emissions and contribute to achieving climate goals. The permit for CO₂ capture has already been obtained, marking an important milestone. The actual realization of the project is still pending, as the investment decision is complex and requires careful consideration. Nevertheless, we remain committed to taking this step toward a more sustainable future.
Wilfred de Jager - Director EEW Delfzijl
EEW and CO₂ reuse in Delfzijl
We asked Wilfred de Jager of EEW Delfzijl about the possibilities for his company in the region. At EEW Delfzijl, sustainability is central to how we operate. CO₂ capture is a key part of this effort. We started with a pilot installation and aim to capture up to 200,000 tons of CO₂ annually. Unlike traditional CCS, our focus is on reusing CO₂ as a valuable feedstock. This fits perfectly with the opportunities in the Delfzijl industrial cluster and contributes directly to circularity.
By reusing CO₂, we avoid fossil resources such as oil and gas while giving carbon atoms a second life. This makes CO₂ reuse not just an environmental necessity but also a sustainable alternative with economic value.
Innovation in CCU is important for EEW because it opens the door to high-value applications. Beyond fuels, we see potential in using CO₂ for bioplastics, proteins, and other circular materials. The higher the value of CO₂ applications, the greater the contribution to a sustainable economy — and the stronger our role as a pioneer in the energy transition.
Delfzijl offers an ideal environment for these developments. With space, robust infrastructure (rail, waterways, roads), and a strong industrial base, it is well suited for setting up and scaling innovative projects. Local collaboration is another strength: multiple companies can supply CO₂ and complementary feedstocks, enabling a truly circular ecosystem.
This unique combination of space, accessibility, and collaboration makes Delfzijl the right place for scale-ups to test and grow their CO₂ technologies. Here, CO₂ is not a waste stream — it is the foundation for new value.

Delfzijl: the ideal breeding ground for sustainable innovation
The Chemport Innovation Center is for UPPACT the place where innovation, knowledge and collaboration come together. The relationship with Chemport Europe, Groningen Seaports, and the local and regional governments is of great importance here for scaling companies.
"In Delfzijl we find the unique combination of a strong industrial base and an entrepreneurial, innovative and circular green-chemistry ecosystem, which allows us to properly develop our sustainable solutions and roll them out in practice." According to Jan-Jaap Folmer, CEO of UPPACT. He believes that innovation, knowledge and collaboration come together in the Chemport Innovation Center, with a strong industry and a circular green-chemistry ecosystem as the foundation.
